St Albans Road Dagnell’s Windmill

On Vallence Croft, (or possibly field known as Highway Close or Bowle Close near the Punch Bowl Inn) there could have been a windmill on land leased and built by Thomas Dagnell.

Date, if built at all, probably between 1718 and 1738. Court Roll of 1736 describes the windmill as ‘lately erected’. It appears to have gone by 1753 when reference is made in the will of William Grimston to Vallence Croft and a ‘former windmill’. After this, the field’s name is Windmill Field.

It was most probably a ‘post’ mill. It could have had John Cudd as its miller, (later of the Crown Pub in Redbourn -1762)
